A 38-year-old man has died after the vehicle he was driving crashed and exploded into flames near St Lawrence, south of Mackay on Wednesday night.

Police said a Subaru Impreza was travelling south along the Bruce Highway near Wumalgi Road about 7pm when it crashed into a MG HS Wagon, travelling north, and caught fire.

The driver and only occupant of the Subaru, the 38-year-old man, died at the scene.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man was entrapped in the vehicle when they arrived but sadly died at the scene after suffering ‘very significant injuries'. The car was on fire when ambulance crews arrived.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle, a 32-year-old woman, and a 33-year-old female passenger, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Rockhampton Hospital.

QAS said the younger woman had leg and hip pain while the other woman had more minor injuries.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said six crews from rural and urban brigades attended the head-on collision.

The vehicle was on fire upon arrival and crews put it out.

The highway was reopened about 3am after police carried out investigations.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
