Police are investigating after a vehicle with three women and a number of dogs crashed down a 10m embankment at Marian, prompting a huge emergency response.
Multiple fire, paramedic and police crews were on scene at the George L Vickers Bridge where the incident occurred about 4.3pm Sunday, barely a week after a 73-year-old council contractor fell to his death at the same site.
It is understood the ute struck a balustrade at the start of the bridge on the Anzac Ave side before driving down a 10m embankment and into trees on the Pioneer River bank.
A nearby resident said he heard a loud “bang” before emergency crews swarmed the area.
Luckily no one was seriously injured in the crash.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said three women were on-board the vehicle when the incident occurred.
She said all women were reportedly conscious and breathing and were taken out of the vehicle by 4:48pm.
The QAS spokeswoman also said one of the women had sustained a back injury but that no one was in a critical condition.
The two passengers – a 45-year-old Mackay woman and 44-year-old Blacks Beach woman – were taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.
The driver, a 24-year-old Sarina woman, is assisting police with their investigation.
Mackay’s Forensic Crash Unit was on scene.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were called to a single vehicle crash at the corner of the Marian Hampden Road and Anzac Ave. Investigations were ongoing.
On June 14 a 73-year-old council contractor died after falling from the same bridge in a 3am workplace incident.
It is believed the man fell between the gap that separates the bridge and the railway line.
The tragedy is being investigated by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors.
