Police have charged a New South Wales driver with causing the death of a motorcyclist following a crash on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Proserpine.
Bakers Creek man David Collins died on the way to hospital after police allege a blue Toyota Corolla turned in front of his bike near Yalboroo on September 16.
Mr Collins was the 14th death on Mackay Whitsunday region roads this year, and the ninth in a terrifying uptick since July.
On September 22 police revealed a 28 year old man was charged with one count of driving without due care and attention causing death.
He faces a maximum penalty of one year’s jail or up to an $11,500 fine and at least a six-month licence ban if found guilty.
Mr Collins was heading to a party in Townsville at the time of the crash and is remembered by friends as an “old school gentleman” who “died doing what he loved”.
“I only saw him last weekend … it’s hard to believe. At least I got a hug in,” friend Sian Carson said.
The Bruce Highway was closed for several hours as police investigated.
But Forensic Crash Unit officer in charge Michael Holland told this publication there was no clear reason for the crash.
“Bottom line is it should not have happened, but it did,” he said.
The man will appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court on November 11.
