A seriously injured racer in his 20s has been rushed to hospital after his buggy rolled, trapping him at the Sarina showground.
It’s understood the young man could lose his arm but has been rushed to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Speaking at the scene of the Sarina Mud Trials racing event, a bystander reported that during the time trials, one racer’s improvised vehicle rolled over and his arm sustained a “severe injury”.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics were treating and working to stabilise the patient for the arm injury.
The spokeswoman said QAS crews were initially called at 12:49 to attend.
A rescue helicopter and multiple other emergency crews remained on standby at the showgrounds and firefighters were still trying to cut the man from the crushed vehicle at 1.40pm.
However, by 2pm the man had been freed and was on his way to hospital via ambulance.
Drivers will be continuing the time trials on Saturday afternoon at a slower pace and the event is expected to continue over the weekend.
More to come.
