Man charged with sexually assaulting woman appears in Mackay court

A man accused of posing as a yoga instructor and sexually assaulting at least two women concealed his appearance as he fronted court for the first time.

A Northern Beaches man accused of posing as a yoga instructor and sexually assaulting at least two women has appeared in court for the first time.

The 28 year old concealed his appearance wearing a beanie and face mask into Mackay Magistrates Court as his case was mentioned for the first time on Tuesday.

He is charged with three counts of sexual assault that allegedly occurred in on April 21 and May 11 this year.

The man, who cannot be named yet for legal reasons, is also charged with three counts of common assault and one count of enter premises and commit an indictable offence.

It is alleged the offending occurred on December 10, 2021, and between May 11 and 14 this year.

The man is further charged with another common assault from an unknown date in 2019.

It is alleged all the offending occurred in the Northern Beaches area.

The man was arrested on May 19 and initially charged with sexually assaulting at least two women.

Police have alleged he entered a pilates and yoga studio and sexually assaulted two women under the guise of pretending to instruct them in some yoga poses.

It is alleged the offending is against six different women.

Under Queensland law anyone charged with a prescribed sexual offence, which includes rape, attempted rape, assault with intent to commit rape and sexual assault, cannot be identified until matters have been committed to the district court and only then if it will not identify any alleged victims.

Defence solicitor Sean Gibb, of Fisher Dore Lawyers, said he had received the material in relation to his client’s case that morning.

Mr Gibbs requested an adjournment to seek instructions.

Matters will be mentioned in July.
