A CRIME prevention strategy implemented by Mackay police has been recognised nationally.
Mackay’s ‘Assault Free Zone’ has been rolled out in schools, hospitals, Safe Night Precincts and at Schoolies events and CQUniversity campuses and accommodation facilities.
Yesterday it was named as the bronze winner in the police-led project section of the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards.
Crime Prevention Unit Sergeant Nigel Dalton said the imitative was designed to remind the community that assaults would not be tolerated — in any part of the community, in any environment or at any time.
“Our sole aim in working within this area of policing is to keep everyone safe and prevent the needless harm that occurs through an assault,” he said.
“Winning this award is an honour to the team that put this project together.”
The Assault Free Zone initiative was launched in October 2017 as an effort to curb violence in all aspects of life.
Australian Institute of Criminology director Michael Phelan said the “simple and cost effective” initiative promoted a clear message of zero-tolerance.
“The project has the potential to be transferred to police jurisdictions across Australia,” he said.
