A man charged over a stabbing attack at a Mackay budget hostel has been identified and could face up to life imprisonment if convicted, as the wounded man is released from hospital.

Stephen Alan Warne is charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm after an incident at Gecko’s Rest Budget Accommodation and Backpackers on Sydney St left a man with multiple stab wounds to his upper body on Mother’s Day.

Mr Warne, 27, appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court via video link Wednesday morning as the case against him was briefly mentioned.

The court heard his matter had been adjourned over from Tuesday.

The charge - acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm - has a maximum penalty of life in jail.

The court heard Mr Warne had initially intended to make a bail application but had since decided not to go forward with the freedom bid.

Matters were adjourned to late July and Mr Warne was remanded in custody.

A 20 year old suffered multiple knife wounds to his arms, chest and back following an alleged fight with a 27-year-old man at the CBD site.

The younger man spent three days in hospital and was released Wednesday morning.

Speaking on Monday Acting Inspector Anthony Cowan said the man who allegedly had the knife had been charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and his bail was being opposed.

“Two occupants of the Gecko accommodation had an argument during the day,” he said.

“(We will allege) it resulted in a 20-year-old male receiving numerous stab wounds to his body.

“Both have been there for some time, they are not just tourists for the weekend.

“It was isolated to an argument inside a residence, although a public residence.

“(There was) no risk to members of the public.”

It is understood the weapon has been recovered but police could not provide the size or type of the knife.

Mackay detectives were on scene speaking with people at Gecko’s Rest on Sydney St where the altercation occurred just after 1pm Sunday.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics took the 20 year old to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

He remained in hospital receiving treatment for those wounds for three days but has now been released.

Investigations into the incident continue.
