A young man remains in custody while his teen girlfriend must report twice a week as part of her bail after police uncovered a serious weapons and drug stash inside a Mackay CBD unit
Police will allege Alwyn Leslie Bright and Taylor-Lee Amber Dillon were intending to sell the drugs that included cocaine and marijuana, before they were arrested as part of a six-month police operation.
The couple, who are facing a combined 27 offences, appeared in court on Saturday and both cases have been adjourned to August 23.
Mackay Tactical Crime Squad officers executed a search warrant at Rivage Apartments on River St about 2pm July 12, where it is alleged they found several firearms, including three rifles, two handguns, a homemade firearm, a taser and several rounds of ammunition.
Police also seized 64g of cocaine, as well as marijuana, cash and drug utensils.
In a video, captured by police body worn cameras, officers can be seen moving through rooms and laying out sealed packages on a kitchen bench.
As a result Mr Bright, 24 and Ms Dillon, 19, are each charged with six counts of unlawful possession of weapons, two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, one count each of producing dangerous drugs, possessing anything used in commission of a crime, possessing utensils, receiving tainted property firearm/ammunition, and authority required to possess explosives.
Mr Bright is further charged with assaulting a watch-house officer. He did not make a bail application and was remanded in custody.
Ms Dillon was granted bail on the conditions she report every Monday and Friday and must abide by residential conditions.
Detective Acting Superintendent Emma Novosel on Wednesday said the arrests stemmed from Operation Kelly and allegedly resulted in more than 64g of cocaine being seized.
Superintendent Novosel confirmed police would allege the pair intended to sell the drugs.
She said any offences involving firearms were concerning to the community.
“We’re always targeting firearms in the community,” Superintendent Novosel said.
“Particularly ones that are held by people who aren’t licensed to hold firearms.”
Operation Kelly is an ongoing operation until October aimed at targeting drug and firearm offenders in the area.
Investigations are continuing with more arrests likely.
Acting Senior Sergeant Troy Hayward said the operation, which brought significant charges, involved officers infiltrating alleged “known repeat offenders across Mackay” and removing “dangerous drugs and firearms from our streets”.
“Illegal firearms and illicit drugs have no place in our community, and we will continue to target offenders and do everything we can to protect members of the public and keep the community safe,” Acting Senior Sergeant Hayward said.
