A Mackay man accused of child stealing has been denied a taxpayer-funded lawyer.
Lonnie Michael Gwilliams is facing one count of child stealing – child under 16 years with intent to deprive the parent possession of the child.
The incident occurred on June 17, 2024 at Mackay.
He has not entered any pleas.
Mr Gwilliams is not in any kind of relationship with the child’s mother.
Mackay Magistrates Court heard Mr Gwilliams had applied for legal aid, was refused, and had since secured private representation.
Rob Beamish, of McKays Solicitors, acted for him when the matter was mentioned briefly on Wednesday and said he had received parts of the brief of evidence.
“There were some items that couldn’t be disclosed due to some provisions, so I’ll have to request them from (police prosecution),” Mr Beamish said.
The court heard this included some video and photo evidence.
Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan vacated existing committal directions in relation to the matter, issuing new directions for the remainder of the brief of evidence to be delivered by.
The matter was listed for mention in mid December.
Mr Gwilliams bail was enlarged and his appearance was excused on that day.
