Lawyers review case against man accused of violent Mackay crime spree

Charges against a man who allegedly shot and forced a driver into a car at a Qld cemetery before trying to kill a second man just months later have returned to court.

Oliver Zveglic is charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, deprivation of liberty, dangerous conduct with a weapon, dangerous driving and unlawful use of a motor vehicle in relation to the alleged Sarina offending.

Lawyers for a man charged over two separate shooting incidents in Mackay are poring over the police case against their client after further material was recently provided.

Oliver Zveglic allegedly shot a man in the hip with a rifle before forcing him, wounded, into the driver’s seat of his own vehicle after a meeting at Sarina Cemetery on June 22, 2024.

Police further alleged Mr Zveglic held a firearm to his head and ordered him to drive to a Sarina service station where the man was able to drive away.

It is alleged this sparked a chase where Mr Zveglic pursued the man throughout the township, shooting at him out the window, before ramming the man’s vehicle on the Sarina Range.

Police have recovered a rifle, which they allege was used in the shooting.

It is also alleged Mr Zveglic evaded police for almost three months during which he shot at a 42-year-old man following an incident at Illawong Dr in South Mackay on August 6, 2024.

It is further alleged Mr Zveglic stole the 42-year-old man’s car. Police allege the pair are known to each other.

He was arrested in the Brisbane area on September 14, 2024 and has remained in custody on remand since.

Mr Zveglic is charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, deprivation of liberty, dangerous conduct with a weapon, dangerous driving and unlawful use of a motor vehicle in relation to the alleged Sarina offending.

He is further charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, deprivation of liberty, assault while armed, five counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts of receiving tainted property and stealing over the South Mackay offending.

His case has remained in Mackay Magistrates Court for more than 12 months and was briefly mentioned this week when Mr Zveglic’s solicitor Daniel Lane, of Harvey Legal, said prosecution had disclosed the material they were waiting for.

The court heard his legal team was reviewing the material and would decide if the matter would proceed via a registry committal or hand up committal.

The case was adjourned to early 2026 for mention.
