A meth addict claims being bashed and arrested was a ‘real turning point’ in his life. Read why.

Ice age: Moment police bust 'multi-tiered' drug syndicate

November 16, 2020 was a day of life lessons for meth addict Karl Robert Blucher.

Police stopped him at Cannonvale after officers saw his car erratically changing lanes and, as a result, the 41 year old bricklayer was busted with a large ice stash.

Mackay Supreme Court heard Blucher had a swollen eye and was bleeding from his nose – he had just been bashed in a scuffle with other drug users.

When police searched Karl Robert Blucher’s car they found a large amount of meth in a black bag.

Crown prosecutor Eddie Coker said officers found a black bag inside the car containing 3.153 grams of pure meth in 6.779 grams of substance and one gram of marijuana.

The court heard the drugs were for his own use.

Blucher, a father, pleaded guilty to aggravated meth possession, possessing marijuana and drug items including digital scales, a spoon and clip seal bags, and used drug utensils.

The court heard Blucher had recently built up a lengthy criminal history from 2014 after he fell into drug use and as a result also fell into criminal behaviour.

This is the second time he has been convicted of aggravated drug possession – the first being in 2015.

Because of Blucher’s long standing drug issues, he should be placed on parole, Mr Coker argued.

“This is very much in my submission (his) last chance,” Mr Coker said.

Barrister Scott McLennan said his client had an excellent employment history up to 2014.

“In 2014 he started using drugs and he had issues with drugs since,” Mr McLennan said, but argued the Cannonvale bust was a “real turning point” for his client.

The court heard Blucher, who had been living in the Whitsundays for work, had been “bashed by some other drug associates” and was hospitalised.

“So he had two real life lessons on that day,” Mr McLennan said, adding his client had since moved to Seaforth and was living with a family member.

Justice David North accepted Blucher has had some sessions with Lives Lived Well. Blucher was jailed for 16 months with immediate parole. Convictions were recorded.
