A legal heavyweight will represent the alleged Mongrel Mob’s Mackay chapter president in a stoush to exclude evidence from a trial.

Blacks Beach man Karl Robert Bailey is facing Mackay Supreme Court charges of drug trafficking and supply, and possessing anything used in the commission of a crime with the offending allegedly occurring between March 2021 and January 2022.

To date he had not yet entered any pleas to the charges.

Mr Bailey was arrested in January 2022 under police operation Sierra Asteroid which targeted alleged organised crime and drug trafficking in Mackay by OMCG The Mongrel Mob.

The court on Monday heard Brisbane-barrister Saul Holt had been briefed on the case and the matter would be listed for a pre-trial hearing involving two high-ranking police officers.

Karl Robert Bailey is charged with drug trafficking and supplying as part of a police sting targeting an alleged drug network linked to the Mackay chapter of the Mongrel Mob street gang.

Crown prosecutor Tiffany Lawrence said one was now a superintendent and the other was an acting commissioner.

The court also heard the pre-trial hearing would be an application to exclude evidence and was expected to take at least half if not an entire day.

The matter was listed for a date in mid 2024 when there was a separate, unrelated murder trial taking place in Mackay.

Justice David North directed any material in support of the application be filed and served no later than 30 days before the hearing date, and that any response by the crown be filed and service no later than 14 days before the hearing date.

The matter is listed for June.
