A YOUNG driver has been given a grim warning of what would happen if he kept speeding.

Kahil Jeffrey Phillips was demerit-point suspended when police stopped him in Bucasia on July 1 this year.

The 21 year old told officers he was unaware he was not allowed to drive until after August 20 as he thought he had applied for the three-month good driving behaviour bond, but had not received any mail.

The court heard his traffic history included a number of speeding offences including driving more than 40kmh the limit and failing to give way at a roundabout.

"Any of those could have caused a bad accident and killed someone," Magistrate Damien Dwyer said, adding the worst case scenario was he would kill someone else followed by himself.

Phillips pleaded guilty in Mackay Magistrates Court to driving while demerit point suspended.

"In a previous life I was a coroner, you know what a coroner is? I inquire into deaths.

"And the number of deaths I've had to inquire into in my career of young blokes like you that are dead because they were speeding more than 20km, they were speeding more than 40km.

"They're not going to see their 21st.

"You're the lucky one, they're not.

"But if you keep it up, you're going to be part of that statistic."

With those stern words ringing in the courtroom, Phillips was fined $800 and disqualified for six months. A conviction was recorded.
