A former Mackay man accused of raping a former lover on a Bowen beach has been acquitted.

The 34 year old, who now lives in Bowen and cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty in Mackay District Court last week.

He was charged with raping the Ayr woman at Front Beach on April 20, 2020.

It was alleged he threatened the woman he had been dating about 12 months, to coerce her to drive to Bowen and have break up sex with him.

He denied the claims and told police she had initiated the “aggressive” sex when things turned sour after they had agreed to meet on the beach to see if they could be friends.

The jury retired to deliberate about 5.15pm Monday and returned a not-guilty verdict just before 11.30am Tuesday.
