A man was pinned inside his car for almost two hours after it left the roadway and struck a tree, destroying the vehicle.

Shocking images show the impact on the vehicle, which has been completed written off.

However he may have escaped serious injury as a result of the single vehicle crash at Valkyrie about 2.44pm Wednesday, November 15.

Fire crews worked to cut the driver, who was the only occupant and on his way to work at Middlemount, from the mangled wreck before he could be flown to Mackay Base Hospital with minor injuries.

The incident occurred at the Fitzroy Development and Barada Barna Rd intersection with reports initially indicating it could be a serious crash as the vehicle’s roof had caved in pinning the driver inside.

As a result multiple emergency crews were called to the scene including police, paramedics fire crews and Mackay’s RACQ CQ Rescue chopper.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man was “quite heavily entrapped” after the vehicle struck a tree.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said another motorist driving past spotted the crash and called triple-0.

Fire crews, using hydraulic equipment, were able to free the man about 4.30pm and he was assessed by the medical team on site before the rescue chopper flew him to Mackay.

The Forensic Crash Unit were initially en route to the scene, which is about 5-10km from Iffley Connection Rd, but were called off once it was established the man’s injuries were minor.

The QPS spokeswoman said the Fitzroy Development Rd was closed at the northern end as a result of the crash but has since reopened.
