A driver has been charged over an alleged high speed highway crash north of Mackay involving a stolen car.
The 45-year-old man was refused watch house bail and will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on Monday.
He is charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving while speeding and driving without a licence.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the two vehicle crash at Yalboroo, about 50 minutes drive north of Mackay, just before 5pm on Friday.
The 45-year-old man was inside a black hatchback that was heading south towards Mackay when it and a white sedan collided.
As a result the black hatchback rolled multiple times, before coming to rest off the highway just metres from a culvert.
The car showed evidence it had scraped along the road on its roof while rolling.
Police officers found the car with its airbags deployed, windscreen smashed and wheels buckled.
Alcohol was also allegedly found inside the back seat, and nearby the vehicle were two boxes of sauvignon blanc, one full and the other empty.
It is unknown whether the boxes came from the car or were there before the crash.
Acting Sergeant Steve Littlewood said the vehicle was of interest to police.
It is understood the black car may have been allegedly stolen from Townsville and was travelling well above the speed limit when the crash occurred.
The driver had initially been trapped in the destroyed car.
“Investigations are ongoing from witnesses,” Sergeant Littlewood said on Friday, adding the male driver was in “quite good physical condition” when he was loaded into the ambulance to be taken to Mackay Base Hospital.
The male driver of the white sedan, believed to be in his 20s, was unharmed in the crash with the vehicle coming to a stop about 100m away from the point of impact.
The Forensic Crash Unit was investigating.
