A Central Queensland mother accused of stabbing her teenage daughter six times in the chest may be found mentally unfit to stand trial.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard she would undergo a psychiatric assessment to see if her case should be referred to the Mental Health Court.

The woman, who cannot be named because it would identify her daughter, is facing charges of attempted murder, serious assault and common assault.

The shock allegations came to light after an incident on July 18, 2022 and the woman has remained in custody on remand since then.

Police were called to a Dysart home where a teen girl lived with her mother following multiple Triple-0 calls, with it alleged the older woman stabbed her daughter six times in the chest before turning the knife on herself.

During the brief mention on Friday defence solicitor Erin Beer said there would be an assessment on Monday to confirm if a referral will be made.

The court heard a psychiatrist would perform the assessment and afterwards a decision would be made whether or not to send the woman’s case to the Mental Health Court, which would determine if she was mentally fit to stand trial for the charges.

This matter has been caught up in the inquiry into the Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services, where evidence samples have been sent.

There has been a delay because there is a pause on testing as a result of the inquiry.

The court heard 25 samples had been sent and not tested, while another 25 samples were yet to be sent.

Prosecutor Leonie Taufa’ao said only 25 could be sent to Brisbane for testing at a time “for procedural reasons”, and once this was completed, the next set of samples could be sent.

Ms Taufa’ao said the date all samples were expected to be collated and tested was August 2.

The matter was adjourned to March 8 for mention.
