Bruce Highway fatal: Cannonvale man charged over Pindi Pindi death of Walter Newton

Townsville man Walter Newton was driving to Mackay with his son when tragedy struck on the Bruce Highway. Now a man police allege was driving a car that struck his has been charged.

A Cannonvale man has been charged over a three-vehicle fatal crash at Pindi Pindi in which a Townsville father died earlier this year.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators charged the 33-year-old man, who was allegedly driving a white Holden utility northbound on the Bruce Highway at 2.35pm on July 16.

It will be alleged the Holden crossed onto the opposite side of the road and collided with a black Ford utility driven by 60-year-old Oonoonba father Walter Newton with his 19-year-old son in the passenger seat.

Mr Newton was died at the scene and his son was flown to Mackay Base Hospital, where he was treated for serious leg injuries.

The Cannonvale man was also transported to Mackay Base Hospital where he was treated for serious leg and shoulder injuries.

A 47-year-old man, driving a Toyota SUV in the southbound direction, was also involved in the crash.

He was not seriously injured.

Police on October 26 issued the Cannonvale man with a notice to appear for one count each of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, possession of dangerous drug (cannabis), possession of drug utensil (pipe) and driving while relevant drug in his blood.

He is scheduled to appear at the Mackay Magistrates Court on December 7.
