A young woman charged over a horror early morning crash that wiped out a motorbike rider could faces up to 14 years jail if convicted of the fatal traffic incident, as her case heads to the district court.
Police allege the 24-year-old driver had both alcohol and drugs in her system when the collision occurred at Marian, claiming the life of Jamie Winn.
Amy Ellen Ford is charged with dangerous driving causing death while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance on October 29, 2023.
It is alleged the silver Toyota Corolla slammed into Mr Winn’s black Harley Davidson about 3am on Mackay Eungella Rd, about 3.5km west of Marian.
Mr Winn, a 35-year-old Mirani man, had been on his way to work at Paget when the horror incident occurred.
Tragically he died by the roadside.
Police allege Ms Ford’s Corolla had crossed into oncoming traffic and into the path of Mr Winn’s motorbike, colliding head on near the Peaches Rd intersection.
The tragedy shattered the Mackay region community with those close to him rallying around his widow Krissinda, who has Multiple Sclerosis. A GoFundMe campaign raised $11,750.
It is alleged Ms Ford had been on her way home from work at the Railway Hotel.
She suffered facial and rib injuries, and was taken to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment.
The dangerous driving charge has since been committed to Mackay District Court via a registry committal, which occurred in late April 2024.
Crown prosecutors have until late October to formally indict her.
Ms Ford is also charged with driving under the influence, possessing a dangerous drug and possessing drug utensils.
These matters were recently mentioned in Mackay Magistrates Court and adjourned to mid October.
