Loved ones of a Sydney teen left fighting for his life after being struck by a taxi while crossing a main road in the Mackay CBD have made an impassioned plea for help, launching a GoFundMe campaign that has already raised more than $6000 in three hours.
Kai Johnson, 19, had been visiting the region from Sydney when the horror incident occurred about 10.40pm, May 2, leaving him with life-threatening head injuries.
He was struck by a Toyota Camry taxi while crossing Sydney St.
The critically injured teen was flown to Townsville University Hospital where he is now in a stable condition.
A GoFundMe was started on Monday, May 5, and as of 3.28pm, had already raised $6281 in three hours from 68 donations.
Organiser Madison Brett wrote, “Hi, we are Kai’s family and are seeking your support to cover medical costs, travel expenses and other necessities during a very difficult time”.
“Kai has suffered extensive injuries and required immediate transportation to Townsville where he is currently undergoing treatment,” she wrote.
“Kai is far from his home in Sydney and the costs of getting family to his bedside and ongoing medical needs are proving challenging.
“We are asking for you to please help our son, brother, cousin, nephew, grandson and dear friend to ensure he is surrounded by the love and support he needs.
“Thank you for any contribution big or small, we are incredibly grateful.”
On Monday a Townsville Health and Hospital Services spokesman told this publication that Kai’s condition had moved to stable.
Queensland Ambulance Service said the teen suffered a significant, potentially life-threatening head injury in the collision.
Mackay’s Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident. No charges have been laid.
Police are calling for anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to come forward.

The crash was one of three notable emergency callouts in the wider region overnight on May 2.
Crews were called to single-vehicle crash on the Marlborough Sarina Rd, Sarina Range, about 1.26am.
A man with back pain was taken to Mackay Hospital in a stable condition.
Earlier, at Moranbah, a primary-school-aged girl suffered an arm injury after a fall from a bike on Mills Avenue about 6.45pm.
She was taken to Moranbah hospital in a stable condition.
