The Mackay CBD is getting a new restaurant as plans drop for a second GYG months after the region’s first opened.
On September 5, 2024 the Greater Whitsundays welcomed the first Guzman Y Gomez franchise, which opened at Mount Pleasant with a special $5 burrito deal.
Now a Brisbane based company called Property Projects Australia has released designs and concept art revealing their spicy plans for a vacant lot on Alfred St near the Sydney Street Markets.
The proposal lodged to council on February 21, 2025 proposes transforming the long vacant lot at 104 and 106 Alfred St into a dine-in restaurant with a two lane drive-thru.
Property Projects Australia said the establishment of a restaurant will “activate” the vacant lot and contribute to economic and social activity within the CBD.
“GYG has captured a strong market demand, particularly in regional cities such as Mackay,” they said.
“Demand for GYG’s offerings remains strong, particularly in inner-city locations such as the subject site, reflecting the continued growth and resilience of the food and hospitality sector in the region.”
Citing the successful opening of GYG Mount Pleasant, Property Projects Australia said the chain wanted to expand its presence with a single-storey restaurant closer to the city heart.
“Pedestrian access is prioritised, with dedicated pathways from Alfred Street and Sydney Street, ensuring safe and convenient entry for visitors,” they said.
The new restaurant will have frontage on Fourteenth Ln, Alfred St and Sydney St, with driveways on Sydney St and Fourteenth Ln upgraded to accommodate.
The proposal includes 20 parking spaces, including one person with disability parking space and Property Projects Australia said “particular attention was given to mitigating any potential adverse traffic impacts”.
Four bike parking spaces will also be provided.
The lot at 104 and 106 Alfred St has been vacant since June 2016 and acts as a temporary car park for surrounding businesses.
“It holds the potential to deliver exceptional outcomes for the Mackay community,” they said.
A Guzman Y Gomez spokesperson said the restaurant was in the early stages of development, but when completed it will employ approximately 80 Guzman Y Gomez crew members.
“GYG is proud to already be part of the nearby local community,” they said.
“Guests love our delicious hot fresh and fast Mexican food and we are confident the new Alfred Street location will be a winner as well.”
When asked if there had a franchisee lined up to manage the store they said ownership was still under review.
