The family of the late beloved Nana Ramsamy has lodged a petition to permanently etch her legacy onto a Mackay landmark.
Grandson John Ramsamy has rallied 27 people in his push to rename Seagull Street Park in Slade Point in honour of his nana Nolear Ramsamy who died in March this year at 103 years old.
In her lifetime, she witnessed the reign of four British monarchs and governance of 26 prime ministers.
Mr Ramsamy said renaming the park next to the boat ramp felt right.
“That’s where 90 per cent of her life was, fishing down the creek,” he said.
Mr Ramsamy said Nana taught all of the Slade Point kids how to fish, hunt and gather including among the mangroves.
“She was born in the Torres Strait, fishing was just in her blood,” he said.
The petition was accepted at the ordinary meeting of Mackay Regional Council on Wednesday with a report to be prepared for future consideration.
