Mackay could share in the glory of Queensland’s golden moment with Brisbane to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The world-class Harrup Park arena, with its TV network capabilities, and the Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex are but two of the potential host facilities for the region to share in the economic benefits of hosting the games.

Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert, in celebrating the announcement, said the 2032 Olympic Games would “put us on the map internationally” which would have flow-on effects for the city.

“I’ll be pushing for Mackay to host an Olympic squad training base where athletes can train at our world-class sporting facilities like Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex and the new Harrup Park arena which has TV network televising facilities,” she said.

“There’ll also be huge opportunities for the whole of Mackay, Isaac, Whitsunday: more tourism, a chance for local businesses to supply equipment and services for the Games, and for our exports and locally-made products to be recognised to a worldwide audience.

“It’s a fantastic day for sports lovers and every Queenslander, and I’m so excited.

“In 2032 we’ll hold the best Olympics yet.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said hosting the 2032 Games was a “phenomenal achievement for Brisbane and South East Queensland”.

“KPMG has estimated economic and social benefits at $8.1bn for Queensland and $17.6bn for Australia.
