A building in a prime location on the Mackay city fringe is set to be completely demolished with tenders for the job due later this month.
The State Government has called for expressions of interest for the complete demolition of the old Mackay Fire Station, which serviced the region for more than 40 years.
The demolition will include all footings, slabs, services and associated works.
It is understood State Development, under the Queensland Government, acquired the land, however future plans for the site are at this stage unknown.
The area, near the city’s CQUniversity campus, has long been identified as a potential site for CBD accommodation.
In 2018 Mackay Regional Council received multiple development applications for city high-rises in the area in relation to Mackay being second site for a Qantas Pilot Training Academy base.
The building, on the corner of Alfred and Sydney streets, served as Mackay’s fire station from 1976 to 2018, when the new $7.2m Fire and Rescue Station was officially opened.
The new building is just a few hundred metres from the old site on Alfred St, opposite Langford’s Hotel.
The city’s fire crew services an area from Yalboroo to Nebo to Waverly Creek.
QBuild began the process for the site’s demolition on September 1, with all tenders due by 2pm on September 23.
All submissions are to be done electronically via the QBuild ETender site.
