Northern Beaches Hub: Sustainability outlined as key priority

Mackay council has interviewed 90 people across 13 sessions to gauge what they want the $25m Northern Beaches Hub to include. When the public will see the designs.

The core group of community members helping design the $25 million Northern Beaches Community Hub want sustainability to be a “standout” feature.

Mackay Regional Council has now held interviews with 90 people across 13 sessions to gauge what they want the master project to include.

Mackay Deputy Mayor Karen May said technology emerged as a key desire as well as making the space inclusive and accessible to “every member of the community”.

“And also to take into account when we’re in the next phase of the project is the sustainability and energy efficiency,” the Northern Beaches Community Hub community reference group chairwoman said.

Cr May said reference group members represented a broad-section of stakeholders with their feedback to be compiled in a report for presentation at the next meeting.

This is expected to be held in November 2021 or February 2022, followed by a call-out for new members to join the committee.

It is understood the public will get a chance to view a draft design for the $25 million hub once the council reviews preliminary designs and considers budget implications later this year.

The actual building of the hub is subject to funding with the council keen for state and federal government help to get the project across the line.
