There’s a new burger joint coming to Mackay and it’s going to be the ‘Ducksnuts’ – literally.
The owners of a popular Paget cafe with an almost cult-like following are expanding into their third business, which will be located in the heart of the city.
Excitement is already building for the opening of Ducksnuts Created Food at 28A Victoria St set to open at the end of next month.
The brains behind this new venue are couple John Brown and Leanne Tranberg, owners of Paget’s Good Day Cafe.

“We’re really excited,” Ms Tranberg said.
The menu, Ms Tranberg said, would be similar to the Caterpillar Dr cafe – but with a twist – diners are told to “expect the unexpected”.
“John’s working on the menu …(he’s) the chef and he’s the one who comes up with all the great ideas,” she said.
“We’re a little bit different with the names of food.”
Their creative flair, already showcased at the Paget premises, has garnered the couple a devoted following – particularly tradies – who hurry to lock in their orders as soon as the specials hit.
“We often get people ring up and say they are coming from the harbour and place their order,” Ms Tranberg said.
“We have got some really really great customers … and the support we got through COVID.”

As many businesses struggled when Queensland was caught in the grip of the pandemic, the couple, along with Ms Tranberg’s son Brandan and his wife Billy-Jean, began building a foodie empire by opening second business YAW on Gregory St in August last year.
“We like to support the local community, we like to hire local staff, we buy all of our products locally as well,” Ms Tranberg said.
“To try and keep the money in the community.”
Ducksnuts will be the third business for Ms Tranberg and Mr Brown, which the couple hopes will become another hub for hungry tradies.
Well known for their sometimes outrageous fare, Ms Tranberg said the menu at the new venue would include burgers, gourmet sandwiches as well as various healthy options.
Ms Tranberg said the menu would be subject to seasonal change as well.
Some of the burger items to expect include:
It’s A Dusty Monday – grilled cheese, fried eggs, crisp streaky bacon, potato rosti, wilted spinach, hollandaise and pistachio crumble.
Magregors On The Floor – smoked wagyu brisket, beer braised onions, a 120g beef pattie, Swiss cheese, bacon, aioli and gravy.
Bin Chicken Kickers – two tempura chicken patties, smashed avo, toasted dukkah, garlic aioli and salad.
When asked how the pair came up with the name for their latest eatery, Ms Tranberg laughed: “Well John calls me ‘duck’ and he’s the chef and he’s nuts so we just went – Ducksnuts.”
