A convoy of army tanks has been halted by a three vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway north of Mackay.
Three firefighter crews, three police units, three paramedic crews plus a critical care paramedic were called to the scene at Palm Tree Creek, Kuttabul about 3.15pm.
A driver was trapped in the crash and a semi trailer truck was leaking fuel onto the road.
Senior Sergeant Tony McDowall said a Subaru sedan and a Mazda Ute were travelling southbound towards Mackay when the sedan driver, seemingly not paying attention, collided with the rear of the ute.
“(The sedan) has been flicked out in front of the (semi trailer) truck,” Sergeant McDowall said.
Firefighters had to cut the Subaru sedan in half to free the trapped driver.
The Mazda ute was crushed on the driver’s side and the semi trailer truck carrying the army tank at the front of the convoy was also damaged in the crash.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a male in his 20s was taken to Mackay Base Hospital with leg and shoulder injuries in a stable condition.
The spokeswoman said two other occupants were not injured.
It is understood the truck was leaking fuel onto the Bruce Highway.
Two other trucks carrying Australian Defence Force tanks were in the queue of traffic waiting for emergency services and towing companies to clear the road.
The highway is starting to reopen to both lanes.
