Mackay
Don't miss out on the headlines from Mackay. Followed categories will be added to My News.
With so much sport going on in Mackay our athletes are continuing to dominate and we have found the 10 best performances to highlight the busy week that was.
There were so many great performances that could have made the inaugural list, however the following 10 stood out in a week that included charity challenges and statewide events.
10. Division 2 men's basketball: Dean Andric scores 23 as St Pats win by one basket
There's no event more thrilling than a close basketball game and for St Patrick College’s Dean Andric, he did everything in his power to be on the wining side of it. Amassing a huge 23 points, Andric lead his team to a huge win to come in at number 10 of this week’s count down.
9. Adam Zurvas returns to form with 84 runs in Magpies’ cricket win
The league's best scorer got back to it after a hard knock last week against Walkerston Cricket Club. Zurvas steadied himself well and helped the Magpies return to the winners list in Round 7.
8. Aston Paganoni and Hunter Herrington each with six goals in the men's U13 hockey state titles
Mackay’s sharp shooters were on song at the weekend as they did their best to secure their team a medal at the 2022 Indoor State Championships. Combing for 12 total and six each, the two were dominant in their time in front of goal and came away with the equal fourth highest scoring across the competition.
7. Division 2 women's basketball Kaeli Inkson (12) and Tannum Kingston (11) get their team over the line in a one point win.
More clutch basketball was happening in Mackay as the Division 2 women were only separated by one point in a huge win. Souths outlasted fellow Mackay team the Drag-ins as Inkson and Kingston combined for 23 of the team’s overall 28 to close the door late in the contest.
6. Kobey Sager (34) and Kye Medhurst (28) continue scoring blitz in men's Division 1 basketball
It’s dark in Division 1 given Medhurst and Sager continue to keep the lights out. The pair is elite in every way, and with the current scoring battle at the back end of this, the season is sure to be incredibly interesting. Sager is averaging 21 and Medhurst 19.5 which will only continue to rise as the year progresses.
5. Mitchell Wadsworth goes to number one wicket taker in DBCT Cup after 3/39 effort
Mitchell Wadsworth’s three wickets had him climb to the number one bowler in the competition and helped his brothers team get over the line in Round 7. Wadsworth was hammering them down the pitch all afternoon long and was rewarded in his dominant display as the league's best moving forward.
4. 13 year-old Mia Waugh selected for Queensland elite Futsal team to head to Fiji in September, 2023
This is a great story in junior sport. Mia Waugh, a basket-balling name here in Mackay has been selected to represent the state’s elite junior women's team for Futsal in Fiji next year. No stranger to being selected in teams, this is a huge honour for Waugh and her family and is a noteworthy headline for this week.
3. Michael Comerford of the Brothers scores 80 off 66 balls in DBCT Cup
If it was easy, everyone would do it. Brothers’ batsman Michael Comerford made the weekend his own as he narrowed in for a solid knock of 80 during Round 7 of the DBCT Cup. Not only is the 80 impressive, but to do it facing 66 balls is an enormous feat.
2. Mackay U13 boys indoor hockey team claim fourth in the state
Well I’ve already mentioned the sharp shooters in the countdown, but not the result. Mackay’s U13 boys hockey team closed out to finish fourth in the state’s 2022 Indoor State Championships. A hot and humid weekend meant some tough conditions but the boys fought hard across the three days to fall just shy of a medal in Division 1.
1. Sean Mullany and Joel Brown raise $4000 by completing the David Goggins Challenge
This one blows my mind. Taking the number one spot in this inaugural countdown are Sean Mullany and Joe Brown from the Mackay Cutters’ rugby team. They raised more than $4000 for Run for Mi Life by taking on the Goggins Challenge. The men covered 78km over 48 hours, running 6.4km every four hours in that time. It is a huge result in a hot climate and considering they are non-runners, they did a terrific job raising much needed funds for a great mental health orgnaisation.
Congratulations t0 this week’s top 10
