Riders will soon be saddling up to save lives as a 36-strong contingent head on a week-long pilgrimage to raise money for regional families facing childhood cancer.

The 11th annual Postie Bike Safari will leave from Mackay on August 24 and cover more than 2000kms.

Riders will be travelling to Eungella Dam, Lake Elphinstone, Lake Maraboon, Canina Dam, Lake Awonga and Lake Monduran before returning to Mackay.

While on the ride they will run raffles and seek donations, as well as spread awareness about Childhood Cancer Support which provides free accommodation and support services for regional families who must travel to Brisbane for long-term lifesaving cancer treatment.

So far, the group has raised more than $78,000 for the charity.

Childhood Cancer Support Committee Member and Mackay charity ambassador Bert Pulman said he was proud to raise funds for such an important charity.

Mr Pulman knows first-hand how important the charity was for regional families “having relied on Childhood Cancer Support’s services for my own family during my son’s treatment in Brisbane”.

“It’s an incredibly emotional and difficult time when you’re told that your child has cancer,” Mr Pulman said.

“The logistics of travelling to Brisbane for long-term treatment is an added stress and burden that you just don’t have the capacity to deal with at that time.”

Mr Pulman said he was “very grateful” to everyone who had donated already.

“All the money raised in this year’s safari will go towards a new accommodation village with a further 15 units for regional families, adding an additional 5,000 nights of free accommodation each year,” he said.

“We have a great team of riders and support members who enjoy the week-long adventure.”
