The continued exposure to Covid is being reported widely across the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions, and the virus is not exclusive to aged care or the immunocompromised.
Parents and staff across the regions are reporting high numbers of Covid within schools, with students testing positive less than one week into 2022’s first term.
Reports of school infections come as 280 children between five and 11 years old tested positive across the state on Thursday.
The total number of school-aged children that tested positive reached 1149 in the past 24 hours.
Chief health officer Dr John Gerrard warned the virus was widespread.
“It’s not a surprise and we’re not unduly concerned about it,” he said.
“We just need to see what happens with the trend with children.
“The main lesson from that is that this virus is very widespread, that has been the case for a number of weeks.”
