Two Mackay-Whitsunday schools will benefit from almost $1.5m worth of new contracts, helping tradies also get back on the tools.
In the next two months, local tradies will work on upgrades at Mackay schools, including a new hall roof at Mackay North State High School worth almost $1m and a $550,000 extension and refurbishment of Bucasia State School’s tuckshop.
Education Minister Grace Grace said the contracts awarded in March and April were part of the Palaszczuk government’s multimillion-dollar budget action plan for the Mackay-Whitsunday region.
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert welcomed the local investment in the region’s schools and local jobs.
“The Mackay-Whitsunday Regional Action Plan includes $43.2 million to maintain, improve and upgrade schools,” she said.
“This includes new classrooms at Cannonvale State School, an aquaculture training centre at Cannonvale High, and industry-standard upgraded training facilities at Mackay Northern Beaches State High.
“Schools infrastructure is a central element of the Palaszczuk government’s economic plan for recovery.
“These new projects are just a fraction of the projects under way as part of our $1.9 billion education statewide infrastructure spend in the current budget, supporting 4800 jobs.”
Ms Grace said the government was committed to creating jobs as part of Queensland’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan.
“The education portfolio is more than pulling its weight in this space with the delivery of a $1.9 billion statewide infrastructure investment portfolio in 2020-21, supporting an estimated 4758 full-time jobs,” she said.
“We are focused on getting people back to work as we unite and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“These projects are building on our record investment in building new schools, expanding existing schools in high-growth areas and supporting local economies.”
