Mackay rugby league fans are preparing for the game of the round this Saturday with the Moranbah Miners and Mackay Magpies set to go head to head at Daryl Bourke Oval.

The Miners are coming off a convincing 34-10 victory against the Whitsunday side, where they led 24-0 at halftime.

Despite losing some momentum towards the end of the contest, the Miners managed to hold on for a comfortable win.

The try scorers for the Miners included Steven Stafford, Logan Sullivan, and Aidan Young.

After finishing last season at the bottom of the ladder, the Miners will be looking to register their second win of the season and continue their positive start.

If successful, it will be a huge boost for the side, as they only managed to secure three wins in 12 games last year.

Meanwhile, the Magpies got the better of Wests Tigers in round one, in what was a show stopping finish for the 2022 grand final replay.

The Magpies won by just a try, with star recruit Kauri Aupouri-Puketapu proving crucial in the contest.

Aupouri-Puketapu converted three out of four kicks and scored a try in the process.

Aupouri-Puketapu spent two years in the Hostplus Cup with Wynnum Manly before making the switch to the Sunshine Coast Falcons last year.

Now at the Magpies, the talented halfback will be looking to impress during his stay in Mackay. A win this weekend would solidify his status as one of the best players in the competition.

Coming up against the Miners this weekend, the Magpies will feel confident in their system and gameplay from round one.

However, they will be wary of the Miners, who will be playing as though they have nothing to lose.

This will be the Miners’ first home game of the season, which is sure to add to the excitement for fans of the club with both sides expected to put on a show come 3pm Saturday.
