THE Mackay region is almost Covid-19 free.
A Mackay Hospital and Health Service update confirmed there was only one person still being treated for the virus.
This is down from two active cases just a few days ago.
The news is an encouraging step forward towards restrictions being lifted even further.
It has now been more than two weeks since the Mackay district recorded its last new coronavirus case in what Mackay leaders have labelled a big win in the region's fight against the pandemic.
But residents are urged to practise social distancing this weekend while they enjoy picnics, recreational fishing and other activities that were formerly banned.
Mackay hits encouraging milestone in Covid-19 fight
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert said she did not want to see social distancing and hygiene requirements relaxed too far only for a second wave of the virus to hit, as had been experienced in Singapore.
If this was to happen, Mackay would be prepared with a respiratory clinic opening this week to support local GPs with patients who require further assessment and testing for coronavirus.
Mackay leads region with Covid-19 response clinic
Since the virus outbreak, there have been 1045 self-quarantine notices issued in the Mackay HHS area with 74 still active.
There have been 15 confirmed Covid-19 cases in Mackay HHS, the first was announced on March 17.
