History has been made at The Crater after the Mackay Meteors rocketed to the top and claimed their second title, setting a new record for the league.
The unstoppable trio of coach Joel Khalu and star players Isaac White and Todd Blanchfield have made the Meteors the first team in NBL1 history to win two championship titles.
The decisive second Grand Final game on Saturday night proved too much for the Brisbane Capitals, with a packed crown erupting over the home court win, whcih finished 102-80.
Mackay’s own Blanchfield was awarded Grand Final MVP after his return from the Gold Coast Rollers, with a series average of 25.5 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3.5 steals.
In the final game he scored 27 points, closely followed by team captain Isaac White’s 22 and Emmett Naar’s 19.
Khalu has previously credited the team’s recruitment, saying “we really went out headhunting some guys that were going to impact winning at this level”.
With Kahlu taking on an assistant coaching job with NBL team Illawarra Hawks at the completion of this season, he is set to relinquish his role as general manager and could well end up stepping away from coaching at the Meteors as well.
