A Mackay health executive, who this morning announced her resignation, has cited “family” as the reason behind her shock move.
Mackay Hospital and Health Service chief executive Lisa Davies Jones said she was proud to have led the health service through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“My family are at the core of my decision. I want to be with my husband in Brisbane and this will enable me to do that as well as spend more time with my family in the UK,” Ms Davies Jones said.
This comes as a report into Mackay hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology departments is due later this month – the investigation followed a string of complaints about caesarean complications.
“With the report on Mackay HHS obstetrics and gynaecology services due later this month and our maternity co-design project moving into the next phase, the timing feels right for me to pass the baton on to a new chief executive who can deliver on the recommendations of the investigation, as well as the positive developments coming from our maternity co-design project,” Ms Davies Jones said.
Ms Davies Jones will finish on 9 September.
“I have immensely enjoyed my time as chief executive for almost two years during what has been a challenging time for public healthcare in Queensland,” she said.
“In my time with the health service it has been gratifying to see the investment in capital projects which will help us meet the current and future needs of our community. Sarina and Moranbah will have new hospitals and the Base Hospital expansion is funded and fast-tracked.
“I know these projects will help our staff in continuing to deliver the best public healthcare for our community.”
Ms Davies Jones said she was also very proud of the maternity co-design project which was underway to work with staff and consumers to ensure maternity care is the best it can be.
MHHS board chair Darryl Camilleri thanked Ms Davies Jones for her work and advocacy since her appointment in October 2020.
“Not only has Lisa been an advocate for staff and community in the board room, she has also been our voice for regional health services through her role in health system leadership on a state level,” Mr Camilleri said.
As chief executive she has chaired the Better Health North Queensland and the Advancing Kidney Care 2026 Collaborative and supported the Rural Maternity Taskforce to ensure regional and rural health staff and consumer voices are heard.
Ms Davies Jones said she had valued the opportunity to advocate for the needs of the health service community.
“It’s an exciting and optimistic time for Mackay HHS as I pass on to a new chief executive,” she said.
