This comes after two drivers were taken to hospital after a head on crash on a busy road just outside of Mackay that resulted in a woman being trapped inside her vehicle.

The Mackay Eungella Rd was blocked in both directions at Pleystowe after multiple police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the two car collision about 7.48am.

Traffic was backed up for about one kilometre as fire crews had to extricate the woman from her car.

Both cars were severely damaged in the collision and had to be towed from the scene.

A woman in her 60s had to be removed from the vehicle while a woman in her 40s suffered an arm injury.

Both were taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The road has since been reopened in both directions.
