Mackay, I have some news.
After almost four years at the helm of the Daily Mercury, this is my final week.
It’s been a rough ride at times — 2020 proved my most challenging year to date.
But it has been my honour to be the editor of this masthead with such a proud history of more than 155 years
I have come to love this community so much, I have decided to stay.
I am moving into a national digital role where I will work with younger journalists and news directors across the country but I can do that from Mackay.
I have overseen momentous change for the Daily Mercury over my years in this role.
But, as a team, we have kept you at the heart of everything we strive to do each day – report on what matters to this community and region.
Highlights have included coming runner-up in the INMA Global Media Awards for our My Town initiative in 2021 and then receiving an honourable mention in those same awards this year for the return of this weekly newspaper to complement our digital offering.
But it’s the community stories at the heart of what we do that I will miss the most — successfully campaigning for a Hub for our Heroes and Harrup Park expansions chief among them.
And the celebration of those in our business and sports communities from Mackay’s 30 under 30 list to the Power 50 to our hidden gems – the Mackay and Whitsundays corporate stars flying under the radar.
Rather than farewell, here’s to new beginnings.
I look forward to seeing all those friendly faces I have come to call friends once I’m in my new role
While the hunt for a new editor continues, the Merc’s former deputy editor Melanie Plane will oversee Mackay.
