The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Mackay police are investigating the “causal factors” of a crash that claimed a man’s life, including reports the vehicle was seen driving erratically moments before the collision.

Mackay Acting Inspector Jeremy Novosel said emergency services responded to the incident on Nebo Rd in West Mackay about 8.15pm Tuesday.

A 58-year-old East Mackay man was found inside the vehicle that crashed into a parked car on one of the city’s busiest streets.

He was rushed to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition but passed away.

His death is the 14th road fatality in the Mackay district since January 1.

Mackay Acting Inspector Jeremy Novosel said police were calling for dashcam footage following a fatal crash on Nebo Rd.
Mackay Acting Inspector Jeremy Novosel said police were calling for dashcam footage following a fatal crash on Nebo Rd.

“At this stage our Forensic Crash Unit is actually investigating the causal factors of that,” he said.

“There is some information that there was some erratic driver behaviour but as to the nature of that driver behaviour or the causal factors is still yet to be established.”

Acting Inspector Novosel said serious and fatal crashes were investigated as a matter of course, which included sourcing and reviewing any dashcam and CCTV footage.

“As we always do in these sorts of incidents, we acknowledge that there are people who have dashcam footage, they might have their own CCTV footage … in the near vicinity,” he said.

“What it does provide is some clarity as to what has occurred which can assist in that investigation process.”

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics rushed the man to Mackay Base Hospital under lights and sirens.

He said it appeared the man had experienced a medical episode before the crash and he was the only person in the vehicle.

The Transport and Main Roads Department said the southbound lanes of the Bruce Highway were closed near the intersection as a result of the crash.

As police prepare for Fatality Free Friday this week, Mackay’s road toll is at 16 deaths already in 2022.
