Night Watch, which began on Wednesday, will be the last production performed at the Shakespeare St address.

But Kucom Theatre media liaison officer Bronwyn Grannall said the new location is yet to be found.

"We've sold our property to Auto Corner (in August 2010) and the money is in a bank account for when we find somewhere," Ms Grannall said.

"We've been Mackay's Community Theatre for 64 years and now we don't have a home."

She said a number of options exist, including the opportunity to buy a block of land and build, or to find an existing building and adapt it to a theatre.

"We've asked (Mackay Regional) Council if there's availability of a venue for community use, but we've had no joy (because there are other community groups that we have to consider)," she said.

She said hiring spaces at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre and CQUniversity's Conservatorium of Music could also be an option.

The group doesn't receive any funding and has always supported itself.

"I'm sure if we were a football club, there would be no troubles (to gain assistance).

"I think we do merit the same support because apart from us there's only the Mackay Comedy Players and Crossroad Arts.

"Schools have their own drama groups and have facilities at school, but that's part of the education system.

"We need a home of our own. We have the money but we have to be super careful how we spend it, otherwise it will be all gone.

"We are happy to pay to hire but the more we nibble away at our capital, the less we have to buy our own property when the time comes. All reasonable offers will be seriously considered."

The production will run for three weeks on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and will wrap up on December 10.
