TIM Mulherin held Julieanne Gilbert's hand high when he declared her the new member of Mackay.

Ms Gilbert thanked the former member and her husband, Cr Frank Gilbert, in her first speech at her celebration party in East Mackay.

She said Mr Mulherin's dedication to the region had helped her secure a Labor seat.

8.01pm:

JULIE Boyd has graciously accepted defeat to win the seat of Mackay.

The Independent candidate admitted she knew winning the seat would be difficult.

"It was always going to be difficult being an Independent," she said tonight.

"The community has accepted they want the status quo."

Ms Boyd was with her husband Bill, her friends and supporters at The Dispensary to end the long campaign.

"Tomorrow I will put my feet up and have a very quiet day."

7.30pm:

JULIE Boyd has accepted defeat for the seat of Mackay. 

Julieanne Gilbert, the ALP candidate, remains in the lead for the seat of Mackay with 42% of the vote. 

Deon Attard follows with 26%. 

7.07pm:

JULIEANNE Gilbert has overtaken Deon Attard in the results tally for the seat of Mackay.

Gilbert has over 40% of the vote with 13% of the votes counted.

Attard follows with 28.20% of the votes.

6.39pm LNP member Deon Attard leads the way for seat of Mackay:

LNP member Deon Attard is currently leading the way for the seat of Mackay on, 37.27%.

Followed by Julieanne Gilbert on 30.91%.

Independent Julie Boyd is on 24.55%.

3.51pm:

IT'S only two hours until voting closes for the State Election but Julie Boyd has denied any feelings of nervousness.

The Independent candidate for Mackay was meeting people at Pioneer State High School, Andergrove State School and the Mackay Showgrounds today.

"I am not nervous. The outcome will be whatever the votes determine," she said.

"I have been getting some positive vibes from the people I have spoken to today."

Ms Boyd had great support from her family during the final stages of campaigning.

"My husband is handing out flyers and I have my daughter helping as well," she said.

READER POLL

IF THE Daily Mercury reader poll is anything to go by Julieanne Gilbert (ALP) may win the seat of Mackay.

Sitting Labor MP Tim Mulherin is not running for re-election and five candidates are vying for the seat of Mackay.

Julieanne Gilbert leads the poll at 36% followed by Julie Boyd (IND) on 26%.

VOTING

ABOUT 2.5 million Queenslanders were expected to lodge their vote today.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland says 328,601 people have already voted in pre-polling.

Voting is compulsory and polling booths close at 6pm.
