MAKING a difference in the community and to the lives of residents is Laurence Bonaventura's main goal.

The Mackay councillor candidate and father of three has already served two terms on council and is determined to continue his work with local government.

Cr Bonaventura said the Northern Beaches Community Hub would be one of his main priorities if elected.

"It is high on the priority list to work with council to find a solution; we need to produce something that will meet the needs of the Northern Beaches community, and it will need to have some sort of aquatic facility," he said.

Cr Bonaventura said he would also like to see a review of council's rate system, which determines how much each resident pays.

"I think we need to determine if everybody is still paying a fair and reasonable amount for their property, because we do not want to put unnecessary burden on some residents."

A Habana resident and self-proclaimed country boy, Cr Bonaventura has strong family ties to the region.

He attended Mackay North State High School and spends his free time tinkering with cars on the farm or spending time with his wife Kerry, his children and grandchildren.

Some of the achievements the councillor said he was proud of during his last terms on council included the creation of dump vouchers, the opening of Mackay's first dog park, the delivery of the Mackay ARC, Playtpus Beach, Hospital Bridge fishing pier, Sugar Bowl skate park and the Mirani sewerage treatment plant.

Those projects were an example of the council working together to turn dreams into a reality and on budget, Cr Bonaventura said.

"I feel like we have been able to make a real difference over the past eight years and I would like to continue on that path."

Cr Bonaventura said he felt like independent candidates could offer free thinking and give the public a better chance to have their issues addressed.
