After less than six months in Mackay, a Victorian burger business has given up on North Queensland finding the climate didn’t agree with them.
Gypsy Burger, first founded in Torquay, Victoria as a burger truck before adding a sit-down restaurant, tested the waters in Mackay from July 4.
Owned by husband and wife Adrian and Jess Lal and ran out of the car park of Sinclair Meats, the plan was to run a three month trial and potentially expand to a permanent restaurant.
After the three months, the Lals decided to shut down, calling the truck too hot to operate from in a Facebook post on October 15.
“Turns out we couldn’t handle the heat and we had to get out of the kitchen,” the post read.
“The conditions inside the truck are just too hot for our staff to endure every day.”
The couple thanked the Mackay community for welcoming and supporting them.
The food truck has since been advertised on Facebook marketplace for $45,000 — down from their first price of $50,000.
The “absolute workhorse” of a trailer comes with a 600mm flat grill, a 600mm flat grill/oven/stove combo, double basket deep fryer and has been serviced in the last three months, the owners claim.
They have offered to ship the truck to “anywhere on the east coast for a fee”.
