THE getaway driver in a caravan burglary has claimed he had no idea of his role until his mate returned to the car wearing a balaclava and armed with a bar.

THE getaway driver in a caravan burglary at Lowood has claimed he had no idea of his role until his mate returned to the car wearing a balaclava and armed with a bar.

Robert John Reynolds is appealing against his conviction for being a party to entering the caravan while armed.

He was found not guilty of demanding money and painkiller-like pills during the burglary.

His barrister told the Queensland Court of Appeal that the trial judge erred directing the jury about the evidence.

He said if the jury rejected Reynolds' version to police then that did not mean they should automatically leap to the contrary conclusion that he was guilty.

The barrister said the trial judge should have directed the jury about how they then dealt with the circumstantial evidence and drew inferences from them.

The Crown argued the jury was entitled to reject Reynolds' denials about his involvement in the burglary and draw inferences from the fact he had been driving around suburban streets with his mate in the early hours of the morning.

The appeal court has reserved its decision.
