The competition to snag the attention of a growing number of grey nomads and families hitting up the recreational vehicle lifestyle could soon intensify.

Laguna Developments and Mitchson, both Caboolture-based businesses, have applied to Mackay Regional Council to build a 70-site RV park at 7-11 Condor Parade, Midge Point.

The almost 61,500sq m site, about 50 minutes drive south of Airlie Beach and 90 minutes north of Mackay, adjoins their existing businesses — the Midge Point Tavern and next-door block of shops.

The development is also only a four-minute drive away from an existing contender, the pet-friendly Travellers Rest Caravan and Camping Park set on 50 hectares.

Documents state the new park opposite the Coral Sea would boost commercial activity in Midge Point while not detrimentally impacting the community’s semi-rural lifestyle.

“The proposed tourist park is not anticipating to be at full or near full capacity at all times; minimising any potential impacts to the amenity of existing rural residential residents,” documents state.

“(It) will offer visitor(s) the option to stay longer than three consecutive nights in order to allow the patrons to explore and experience the local region more conveniently. “

If approved, the tourist park would be built over two stages with the first including 29 self-contained sites accessed via the tavern’s driveway.

A further 41 sites would be added in stage two, with a second access opened via the shop’s driveway.

Documents state the park included an amenities building with toilets, showers and a laundry but there were no provisions for a sports court, swimming pool or kiosk.

This is despite design plans submitted to the council showing a pool.

Visiting tourists would also benefit from the construction of the recently approved Midge Point boat ramp, a development residents had fought for after access to the nearby Laguna Quays boat ramp was closed off following a tropical cyclone.
