A fire alarm alerted the Racecourse homeowner to the blaze that would soon consume his home.
Smoke could be seen billowing from Nebo Road, more than 2km from the Peak Downs Highway home.
Mackay fire station officer Stephen Hughes said the front of the house was fully engulfed by flames when crews arrived on scene about noon.
He said firefighters battled the dry and windy conditions which threatened to spread the fire to a neighbouring house just metres away – it took 16 people and four trucks to extinguish the blaze.
Mr Hughes said crews managed to get the fire under control in half an hour, but the damage was already done.
“There is a lot of damage,” Mr Hughes said.
“Half of the home is burnt out.”
Earlier reports indicated the fire broke out in one of the bedrooms of the single-story home.
Mr Hughes said the cause of the fire was still unknown but a fire investigator had been contacted.
He said the fire was not deemed suspicious.
Reports indicate the homeowner did not suffer any injuries and was not taken to hospital.
Mr Hughes said the fire served as a reminder for people to check their smoke alarms were working and their electrical items were also in a good condition.
