A historically flood prone stretch of the Bruce Highway has received a much needed upgrade as a collaboration between the state government, federal government and private sector delivers new flood proofing and EV support.

The over $23m worth of floodproofing built over and around Jumpers Creek near Calen, seeks to make travel and freight between Mackay and Proserpine more reliable.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said, “we are working in partnership with the Queensland Government to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity along the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns.”

Further north in Bowen, a public EV fast charging site has been opened with six charging bays ready for use.

This new piece of EV critical infrastructure is the result of a Queensland government led co-fund with industry investors including Tesla.

“We are delivering on our commitment to connect EV drivers across Queensland and the co-Fund will further accelerate EV infrastructure rollout by turning the $10 million government investment into at least $24.5 million investment in charging infrastructure when including third party contributions,” state Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said.

“Increasing the availability of public EV fast charging infrastructure is central to reducing Queensland’s transport emissions.”

The charging site is located at Centre Point Plaza on the corner of Richmond and Soldiers Road, and is one of the first of the 46 EV charging sites the government has promised to deliver by the end of 2024.
