Ex-Mackay Cutters player Ethan Cocco’s rape case adjourned
The effort to send a case against a then-QRL player charged with sexual assault and rape to a higher court has been delayed.
The case against a former Queensland Rugby League player facing sexual assault and rape charges has been delayed by nearly six months.
Ethan Tomas Cocco was accused of raping a woman at a South Mackay address on two separate dates in January, and indecently assaulting her on one of those dates.
He appeared in the Mackay Magistrates court on February 3 to hear his charges read out.
Mr Cocco is currently on bail and was expected to have his case heard for a committal hearing on Wednesday, October 1.
The case was instead adjourned for March 30, 2026, more than a year after the alleged incident occurred.
The 21-year-old is a former St Pat’s rugby league player who signed to the Mackay Cutters in November last year.
In February, the club’s CEO, Dave Roberts said Mr Cocco resigned for ‘personal reasons’ from the club in January, and said they were not aware of the charges at the time.
“The player approached the club on the 21st of January 2025, seeking an immediate release due to personal reasons,” he said in a statement.
