The Resources Centre of Excellence is chasing $11.4m for its stage 2 expansion plans that will broaden the expertise and skills developed in Mackay. Here’s what the frontrunners had to say on the funding.

The Resources Centre of Excellence looks set to benefit handsomely from the upcoming federal election brawl, with Dawson’s Labor and LNP candidates both advocating for a funding boost to support the centre’s expansion plans.

The innovative research and training hub for mining firms and universities is pushing for $11.4m to build out a second wing, which will focus on developing ‘future industries’ within the sector such as advanced robotics and critical minerals.

Dawson Labor candidate Shane Hamilton said he backed the centre’s ambitions.

“I think that Stage 2 there is what we need to do,” he said.

“We need to diversify, ensure we have more industries here in Mackay and that second stage is exactly that.

“We’re looking at rare earths development, we’re looking at different minerals being processed out of that facility and then commercialised from there.

“In my eyes, that’s more jobs for our regions, it’s a whole new process.”

Mr Hamilton stopped short of offering a funding pledge, but hinted that a commitment was forthcoming.

“I’m sure by the time the election comes around there will be some sort of announcement at some stage,” he said.

“It’s definitely something I’ve promoted to my party and we’re hopeful that it will get the nod.”

Mr Hamilton said Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, Opposition Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Queensland Senator Murray Watt were all aware of the centre’s expansion plans.

“We’re definitely making noise where we need to,” Mr Hamilton said.

Nationals candidate for Dawson Andrew Willcox said he would “go to bat” for the RCOE.

“I think it’s a very worthy project, something I’ll be going in to bat for,” he said.

Mr Willcox said the LNP had not yet finalised its election commitments.
