A tropical low-pressure system off the coast of central Queensland will not put a damper on New Year’s celebrations, but it will bring winds to the coastline.

Tropical Cyclone Seth formed in the Coral Sea, about 540km northeast of Mackay on Friday, with wind gusts of 110km/h recorded.

The category one storm was predicted to move away from the coast, before weakening to a subtropical system on Monday.

Seth is moving southeast at about 22km/h, and is not expected to directly affect the coastline over the next two days.

It is expected to bring large waves and swells over the weekend and into the first week of the new year, but it is unlikely to impact Mackay’s coast.

Fraser Island is expected to receive the most damaging wind gusts and swells, with erosion a possibility.

The centre of Seth tracked close to Frederick Reef, off the coast of Mackay, before moving southeast away from the coast.

Mackay’s new-year weather will be without much rain, as the low moves further south and southerly winds bring warm air into the region.
