THE spread of coronavirus has been compared to Cyclone Debbie’s devastation as Isaac Regional Council batters down for the pandemic.

Council libraries, museums, galleries, community and recreation centres, pools and gyms across the region were closed indefinitely this week.

“It has been determined that these events present sufficient risk to participants,” a council media release said.

Mayor Anne Baker said at this stage, there was no disruption to core council services such as waste collection, local transport services and maintaining public parks and recreational areas.

“It is inevitable there will be other impacts on services and the availability of local facilities, particularly if in the event if employees become ill, self-isolate or need to care for other family members,” Cr Baker warned.

“This is an evolving situation and we need to be prepared for the fact that what is in place today may change tomorrow, or at the end of the week, next week or next month.”

Despite the enormity of the threat, Cr Baker said the community was resilient enough to withstand the crisis.

“Council has a well-established track record of working with our community in times of disaster events in order to keep our residents as safe as possible. We did exactly this during Cyclone Debbie and we will do so again,” she said.

“I have always been encouraged by the willingness of Isaac region residents to help each other and I have every confidence we will see this again as we respond to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

All council associated events in the region will have to undergo new coronavirus risk assessments.
